05 May So Serious

Dead Serious. With a name like that you know right from the start that the person with the name is not playing any games. And I got that feeling as I interviewed this artist out of Philly. He is serious about his craft and the message that he is trying to get across with his music. So here it is my interview with Dead Serious.-Mz.Fierce

FIERCE: FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU CAN YOU INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO THE WORLD?

DEAD SERIOUS: WELL I AM AN ARTIST FROM PHILLY. I HAVE BEEN RAPPING SINCE I WAS 10 PURSUING AS A CAREER SINCE 2002 ON AND OFF.  I STAND OUT FROM OTHER ARTIST AS FAR AS MY FLOW STYLE AND THAT I SOUND DIFFERENT, I AM NOT LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE AND I AM HERE TRYING TO MAKE A MARK ON THIS MUSIC GAME SO PEOPLE CAN SEE WHAT DEAD SERIOUS IS ABOUT.

FIERCE: WHERE DID THE NAME DEAD SERIOUS COME FROM?

DEAD SERIOUS: ACTUALLY  WHEN I FIRST STARTED RAPPING TO PURSUE A CAREER I WAS DEALING WITH A MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND ONE OF THE PARTNERS WAS WATCHING ME DEALING WITH A BATTLE RAP AND MY FACIAL EXPRESSION COMES OFF SERIOUS. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF RAPPING AND HE WAS ON THE SIDELINE LOOKING AT ME SAYING EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU IS SERIOUS AND I AM GOING TO CALL YOU DEAD SERIOUS AND I FELT IT FIT MY PERSONALITY SO I RAN WITH IT.

FIERCE: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN MAKING MUSIC?

DEAD SERIOUS: WELL THE WAY I STARTED PURSUING IT IN 02 IT STARTED FROM A BREAK UP. I JUST GOT OUT OF A RELATIONSHIP AND I WANTED TO MOVE FORWARD; I HAVE BEEN DOING MUSIC ALL MY LIFE  AS A HOBBY, AS A LOVE, AND IT MOTIVATED ME TO NOT GET STUCK IN THAT POSITION AND DWELL ON MY PAST. I HAD SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN MY LIFE AND SINCE IT WAS SUCH A NATURAL TALENT I SAID LET ME DO THIS AND TAKE THIS SERIOUS.

FIERCE: DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU PERFORMED LIVE? HOW DID YOU FEEL?

DEAD SERIOUS: FIRST TIME PERFORMING LIVE I THINK I MIGHT HAVE BEEN  IN HIGH SCHOOL IN 9TH GRADE AND AT THE TIME  EVERY SCHOOL I WENT TO PEOPLE KNEW I COULD RAP AND I WAS BATTLE RAPPING AND PEOPLE WERE RESPECTING MY TALENT AND SKILL AT WHAT I DID.  I HAD LINKED UP WITH A DUDE IN JUNIOR CLASS AND HE WAS DIGGING MY STYLE AND ASKED ME TO DO A TALENT SHOW WITH HIM. WE GOT ON STAGE AND WE DID OUR THING AND IT WAS A GOOD FEELING AND AT THE TIME I WAS IN THE 9TH GRADE AND HE WAS A JUNIOR SO THE FACT THAT I HUNG OUT WITH A A LOT OF THE JUNIORS AND SENIORS AND I COULD RAP, I WAS A LITTLE BIT POPULAR AND IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT THE CLASSES UNITED LIKE THAT.

FIERCE: THERE ARE A LOT OF ARTIST TRYING TO GET INTO THE INDUSTRY CURRENTLY, WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM ALL THE REST?

DEAD SERIOUS: THE THING THAT PEOPLE ALWAYS TELL ME THE MOST IS MY FLOW STYLE. I HAVE BEEN RAPPING SINCE I WAS 1O, IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I AM TRYING TO DO. I JUST DISCOVERED THAT I COULD RAP ON SOMETHING AND THAT’S HOW IT ALL STARTED AND I STARTED TO ADAPT WITH TIME NATURALLY.  IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I TRY TO MIMIC AND MY FLOW STYLE CHANGES WITH THE TIME. SOME OF THE TOPICS MAY BE THE SAME BUT THE WAY I PRESENT IT IS DIFFERENT. IT’S KIND OF LIKE KENDRICK AND DRAKE THE TOPCS MAY BE THE SAME BUT THE DELIVERY IS DIFFERENT.

FIERCE: DO YOU HAVE A PLAN B IN CASE YOUR PLAN A DOES NOT WORK?

DEAD SERIOUS: YEAH MY PLAN B THIS TIME IS TO KEEP PURSUING PLAN A. THE WHOLE REASON I LEFT RAP IN THE FIRST PLACE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS NOT WORKING OUT AND I WAS DEALING WITH A MANAGER AND SOME PRODUCERS THAT HAD WORKED WITH JADAKISS AND WAS DOING THINGS BUT SOMETHINGS JUST WEREN’T WORKING OUT SO I LEFT IT ALONE TO PURSUE OTHER VEHICLES.  I WAS STILL RAPPING OUT OF LOVE AND I CAME BACK TO THE GAME AND IT DID NOT PAN OUT BUT AFTER LIKE 8 YEARS I JUST WASN’T HAPPY WITH WHAT I WAS DOING (ELECTRICIAN) I MADE GOOD MONEY BUT IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY BUT I SAID THIS TO MYSELF SINCE THIS IS MY 3RD TIME, I HAVE TO MAKE THIS WORK. I REALLY CAN’T SEE MYSELF LIVING LIKE A NORMAL LIFE WORKING A 9-5 BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER IF I AM NOT HAPPY.

FIERCE: I KNOW YOU HAVE AN UPCOMING ALBUM COMING OUT CALLED “SERIOUSLY”. CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE THEME OF YOUR ALBUM?

DEAD SERIOUS:  ‘SERIOULSY’ IS GOING TO BE A MIXTAPE BUT IT’S ALBUM MATERIAL JUST SO I CAN BOOST MY BRAND, SO I WILL PUT IT ON THE MIXTAPE SITE FOR FREE. ‘SERIOUSLY’ IS MY THEME THAT I HAVE HAD FROM WAY BACK. I ALWAYS WANTED TO PUT AN ALBUM TOGETHER TO REFLECT MYSELF AND WHEN I DECIDED TO SIT DOWN TO REALLY DO THIS, IT’S PRETTY MUCH LIKE SOMEONES FIRST ALBUM. IT’S  A STRONG MIXTAPE, IT’S A LOT OF DIFFRENT COMMERCIAL SONGS AND IT HAS A NICE INTRO, IT TOUCHES ON SOME PERSONAL ISSUES ON THE OUTRO, THIS IS A COMPLETE VERSION OF ME, WHAT I PLAN TO BE WHAT I ENJOY THE MOST AND GIVING THE PEOPLE A PERSONAL SIDE OF ME AT THE END.

FIERCE: ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO YOUR FANS?

DEAD SERIOUS: ANY CHANCE FOR ME TO MAKE IT BIG IS ON MY FANS. THERE WOULD BE NO ARTIST WITHOUT THE FANS AND ANYBODY THAT SUPPORTS ME IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. ‘LIVE MY LIFE AND WALK MY PATH’ I WOULD LIKE TO SAY. KEEP ROCKING WITH ME AND TRY TO GET THE WORD OUT WHO DEAD SERIOUS IS.
